Hammarlund HX-50 Transmitter, Drake 2B/2BQ receiver/q-multiplier, Hallicrafters TO keyer, Vibroplex paddle, Pennwood Numechron Tymeter, B&W SWR meter and Turner microphone.I might have used another combination at the very beginning when I received my General license, but one in particular stands out.  My father to bought me an SSB transmitter at the local hamfest (thanks, Dad) - for $150 I think.  It was a Hammarlund HX-50.  To this I added a Turner desk microphone to use with it (about $10 at Radio Shack).  My Elmer, Wade McKay WA4TFI, loaned me his Drake 2B receiver.  This constituted a real station which I have reassembled as pictured.  I have a Hallicrafters HA-1 TO keyer with Vibroplex paddles in use with  my reconstituted General station.  I remember wanting to get the matching Hammarlund HQ-170 receiver, but only recently did.

ARC-5 (BC-455) receiverI continued also to "soup up" the ARC-5 receiver, adding a home built converter for the higher HF bands.  I also built a 6 meter converter using surplus "peanut" tubes.  I used a Vibroplex bug - a Champion model for CW until I built a tube type keyer, similar to the Hallicrafters TO keyer pictured.. I built a simple phone patch, Monimatch SWR meter and other station accessories.  I received a Pennwood Numechron Tymeter for Christmas to add to the station.  My father helped me build a large desk for about $20 in materials.  I borrowed the Delta ARC's Drake TR-4 for a while and enjoyed using it as well.  I have owned one since but let it go to a friend.

wb4eab.jpg (25110 bytes)  This card was the first I actually purchased in bulk in 1969. A free QSL card distributed by the City of Memphis in honor of the Sesquicentennial in 1969. Many thousands were issued. There was a also an associated award for contact with five Memphis stations during the celebration year.
